🌞 Solar-Thermal Desalination at a Glance
A fully renewable system that evaporates seawater using solar heat and condenses it into fresh water — with no external electricity or fossil fuels. By recovering steam, it co-generates clean power and potable water. Its modular, passive design makes it scalable from small off-grid units to large community installations.
🌍 System Overview
A solar-thermal desalination system that turns seawater into fresh water using only the sun — no external power, no fossil fuels.
By recovering steam, it produces both clean electricity and potable water.
Its modular and passive design makes it scalable, from small off-grid units to large community systems.
⚙️ System Schematic
The system integrates solar collectors, evaporators, condensers, and optional turbines to create a closed water–steam–energy cycle.
It shows how seawater enters, turns into steam, generates power, and becomes fresh water.

🔑 Key Components
- Seawater Intake – filtered water in
- Collector-Evaporator – heats and evaporates seawater
- Moisture Separator – improves steam quality (optional)
- Turbine-Generator – produces electricity (optional)
- Condenser – converts steam into fresh water
- Salt Outlet – directs brine to solar ponds

🌞🌙 System Operation
- Daytime: Collector–Evaporator heats brine → saturated steam → moisture separation → condenser (freshwater). Optional micro-turbine for electricity.
- Nighttime: Radiative cooling creates vacuum → check valve opens → seawater passively refills the evaporator (no pumps).
- Concentration Mode: Brine is retained and further concentrated → sent to solar ponds for salt recovery.

Why it matters
• Off-grid, fuel-free, and low O&M for coastal, island, and remote sites.
• Modular scale-up from pilot to ≥1,000 m³/day (see Roadmap).
• No marine brine discharge; potential salt/mineral revenue.
Integration options
• Micro-turbine generator (co-generation).
• PV Passive Tilt-Adjuster & Passive Tracker for site-level energy synergy.
• Anti-corrosion and anti-scaling materials plan for seawater compatibility.
